Advisory Committee on Official Statistics
One of the recommendations of the Review of Official Statistics is to establish an Advisory Committee on Official Statistics to:
-
provide independent and reliable advice on official statistics to the Minister of Statistics and government
-
represent the wider statistical community, including users, producers and suppliers of official statistics.
Functions
The functions of ACOS are to:
-
advise on the integrity, relevance and quality of Tier 1 statistics so they best meet the needs of users and producers
-
improve public confidence in official statistics by monitoring and reporting on standards, policies and protocols
-
provide comment to the Government Statistician on the performance of the Official Statistics Research and Data Archive Centre (OSRDAC)
-
provide comment or advice on any other matters relating to the official statistics system that is referred to it by the Minister of Statistics
-
produce an annual report on the health of the official statistics system that deals with:
-
-
any changes necessary to improve the coverage of Tier 1 statistics
-
the appropriateness of standards, policies and protocols for official statistics.
Membership
Members of ACOS as of August 2008
The Hon David Caygill is the Chair of ACOS. In addition to the Chair, the ten committee members are:
- Professor Richard Bedford (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Population Studies, Waikato University)
- Dr Peter Bushnell (Deputy Secretary to The Treasury)
- Rob Davison (Executive Director Economic Service Meat and Wool New Zealand)
- Ria Earp (Chief Executive Officer Mary Potter Hospice)
- Don Gray (Deputy Chief Executive Ministry of Social Development)
- Dr Brian Jenkins (Chief Executive Environment Canterbury)
- Professor Alan Lee (Professor of Statistics Department of Statistics Auckland University)
- Phil O'Reilly (Chief Executive Business New Zealand)
- Roger Proctor (Group Manager Ministry of Economic Development)
- Dr Colin Tukuitonga (Chief Executive Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs)
The Government Statistician also joins the ACOS committee as an ex-officio member.

- Dr Bryan Jenkins (Chief Executive Environment Canterbury)

- Jas McKenzie (former Secretary of Labour)
- Phil O'Reilly (Chief Executive Business New Zealand)
- Roger Proctor (Group Manager Ministry of Economic Development)
- Emeritus Professor Alastair Scott (Department of Statistics, the University of Auckland)
- Professor Linda Tuhiwai-Smith (Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori, University of Waikato).
The Government Statistician also joined the ACOS committee as an ex-officio member.

The inaugural ACOS Annual Report was presented to the Minister of Statistics by the Hon David Caygill in October 2006.
