A field test was held during March as part of the ongoing effort to ensure the census efficiently produces relevant information. The field test involved approximately 1,250 randomly selected households in Canterbury. Participating households had the option of completing their forms online or on paper.
The census test trialled parts of the process, including internet initiatives, field collection and strategies, and proposed minor changes to the census forms. Field tests are important as they help gain a better understanding of the public environment, to improve on previous censuses and operate more effectively and efficiently.
Following improvements made after the field test, the Census 2011 dress rehearsal will take place in March 2010.
