Dissemination plays an important role in OS Research. Distribution of the results is one way to increase public sector awareness of the programme and to further the findings. The transfer of knowledge is key to improving and strengthening the Official Statistics System. Findings should be disseminated as widely as possible and promoted to the audience that can benefit from the research and use the results.
Whilst OS Research has its own strategy and that does require some time from the researcher (eg seminars and expert workshops), the programme is also interested in what the researcher will do to promulgate the findings and engage the public sector in the results.
Currently, OS Research's dissemination strategy is to:
- Publish final reports online in the Official Statistics Research Series after they have been peer reviewed.
- Organise seminars for researchers to discuss their results with the public sector and other interested parties and support participation in other seminars and conferences within NZ and overseas.
- Organise expert workshops for those researchers whose findings can be directly applied to a specific government department that would benefit from the knowledge. Expert workshops will be meaningful for the government because it will directly engage them with the research and they will understand how the results can be applied to their work.
- Encourage funded researchers to submit results to refereed journals. Lead researchers should submit papers to appropriate publications. All that is required is Statistics NZ written approval.
- Publicise and promote the findings within Statistics NZ and externally through the Expert Data User's newsletter and other similar electronic outlets.
