National Population Estimates
Purpose
Population estimates are used for many purposes in all areas of society and the economy - including planning; policy formation; monitoring change in health; education; electoral areas; superannuation; territorial authorities; transport; and making business decisions. Estimates are used extensively as 'bottom lines' in the calculation of rates such as death rates; participation rates in education; per capita consumption of alcohol etc.
